WhatsApp Location Sharing — How It Works
WhatsApp supports two types of location sharing:
- Current location — a one-time snapshot of where you are right now
- Live location — your real-time location shared for 15 minutes, 1 hour, or 8 hours
Both use the device's location system. On WhatsApp Web (the browser version), location comes from the HTML5 Geolocation API — the same API that Location Guard can override.
What This Method Can and Cannot Do
| Capability | Browser Extension Method |
|---|---|
| Fake "Send your current location" on WhatsApp Web | ✅ Yes |
| Fake "Share live location" on WhatsApp Web | ✅ For the duration the tab stays open |
| Fake location on WhatsApp mobile app (iOS/Android) | ❌ No — requires a different method |
| Hide your real location from WhatsApp servers | ⚠️ Partially (GPS only) |
This guide covers the WhatsApp Web method using a browser extension.
Step-by-Step: Send a Fake Location on WhatsApp Web
Step 1: Install Location Guard
Follow the Installation Guide to install Location Guard on Chrome, Edge, or Firefox. It takes about 2 minutes and is completely free.
Step 2: Set Your Fake Location
- Click the shield icon in your browser toolbar
- Go to Options
- Set Default Level to Fixed Location
- Click on the map to place your pin — for example, Paris, France
- Click Save
Step 3: Open WhatsApp Web
- Navigate to web.whatsapp.com
- Scan the QR code with your phone to log in (if not already)
Step 4: Send Your (Fake) Location
- Open a chat
- Click the attachment icon (📎 or the + button)
- Select Location
- WhatsApp Web will prompt: "Allow web.whatsapp.com to know your location?" — click Allow
- WhatsApp will show a map centered on your fake location
- Click Send your current location
The recipient will see the location you pinned — not your real one.
Sending a Fake Live Location
Live location works the same way — as long as Location Guard is active and the WhatsApp Web tab is open, the coordinates it reports won't change (since you've set a fixed location). Your contact will see your "live" location staying at your chosen pin.
Note: If you close the tab or disable Location Guard, the live location will stop updating rather than snapping back to your real location.
Important Considerations
Will the recipient know it's fake? There's no visual indicator on the recipient's end that a location was spoofed. The pin appears on the map just like a real location.
Does this work for group chats? Yes — the same method works when sending location in a group.
Can I fake my location on WhatsApp mobile? Not with a browser extension — mobile apps use the phone's OS location services, not the browser API. On Android, you can use a "Mock Location" app in Developer Mode. On iPhone, this requires a third-party computer-based tool.
Is my WhatsApp account safe? Yes. Spoofing the Geolocation API is a browser-level operation that doesn't interact with your WhatsApp account credentials or message content.
Alternative: Google Maps Share Location
The same technique works in Google Maps via the browser:
- Go to maps.google.com
- Allow location when prompted (you'll get your fake coordinates)
- Click your blue location dot → Share your location
- Choose the app to share to (including WhatsApp)
This lets you share a persistent fake location link across multiple platforms.
